Sanderson, TX to Del Rio, TX

4/1/18

Happy Easter!
What a day! The 119 miles seemed overwhelming for me to think about. So I broke the day in to 12 ten mile rides. At each stop I could tell myself that I had only 11,10,9....left to do.
We left at 7:30. It was 57 degrees. The wind wasn't bad yet. By the afternoon It was to be a 10-20 mph headwind. At mile 20 and 40 we had SAG stops. The sky was clouded over and kept the temperature reasonable.  At Mile 60 we had lunch. We were half way done. It was 12:05 when I arrived there. The sky cleared up and the sun was warming things up. I was feeling pretty good at this point but I still had 60 to go. The wind had picked up and along with the very rough shoulder had made the ride more difficult. The next 28 miles were challenging. I was only going 11 mph. My legs were feeling like jello at mile 88.  There was a small convenience store in the small town of Comstock.  I thought that getting out of the sun and taking a little break was needed.  I grabbed a bottle of water, large lemonade, beef stick and frozen Snickers. I checked my text messages and read some much needed encouraging messages from my family. I took a 20 minute break and then was on the road again. I felt so much better! I must have needed calories.  The next 18 miles were a little quicker not easier though. At mile 106 there was a bridge that didn't have a shoulder and the traffic was very busy.  The woman tours' guide had to do a vehicle escort across for us. Once across we had 12 more miles in to the hotel. I arrived at 6:22.
The 119 miles had taken me almost 11 hours. Most of it was riding alone.  A lot of things go through your mind when you are on a bike alone for that long.  One of the funnier ones today was "Wow! I really am riding across the country on a bike!"  Did it take me this long to finally realize that? I'm not sure but I did laugh out loud when I thought that.
Before this ride my longest ride in one day was 100 miles and that was 10 years ago.  The 119 miles was HARD. Would I do it again? Not in the near future. But ask me in a few days when I have forgotten the pains of it and I probably would say "Sure".

  1. Wow, you were really tough! I'm surprised you all didn't decide to make Comstock the end point for the day. Double metric century!
