Lafayette, LA to St. Francisville, LA
4/16/18
Sunrise in Lafayette! We left at 7 this morning knowing that we had 99 miles ahead of us. It was a cool morning. We rode through the busy streets of Lafayette for the first 10 miles. We then got onto some crop lined, rough country roads. Some of the pot holes and cracks could be dangerous if not avoided. Our first SAG stop was at 22.5 miles. We cruised along to the second SAG stop at 45 miles on a very busy highway with a debris filled shoulder. It was like riding through an obstacle course. We were lucky not to get a flat. At this point we were to be escorted over a high bridge over the Atchafalaya River and the 3.5 mile Morganza Spillway. The guides wanted to shuttle us across instead. Another rider and myself decided to ride it. We had made a plan that at a certain point the SAG van would escort us but as we started to ride up to the bridge a woman law enforcement officer saw us and said she would escort us. So she turned on her police lights went forward and waited for us to get to the point we needed her. Thank you to our law enforcement angel for your help! We stopped at the SAG car at mile 70. Stretched, ate some fruit and nuts and drank a protein shake. We still had 30 miles to go. At mile 86 we crossed the mighty Mississippi River. The bridge was awesome and the Mississippi was wide. Very impressive!
We arrived at St. Francisville at 2:45. We went to a small restaurant and had a piece of pie. Part of our group was staying at a B & B in town and the rest of us were staying at the Butler Greenwood Plantation 3 miles down the road.
I ended with another century under my belt but this one was much easier because of the flat terrain. Tomorrow is a day off.
I went to Hot Tails restaurant for supper. I tried alligator bites and crawfish. They were both delicious! I couldn't come to Louisiana without trying them.
Total Miles: 2244
Flats: 3
Ruined Tires: 1
