La Grange, TX to Navasota, TX

4/10/18

Today's ride from La Grange to Navasota  was 70 miles. The wind was a 10-12 mph headwind/crosswind and the temperature got to 75 degrees. The morning started out on a busy road with little to no shoulder.  The semi trucks were so close to me.  The fact that a lot of them would not move over or slow down really wore on me.
Our first SAG stop was in Round Top. The surrounding area and in town was an antiquers dream. There were so many antique shops along highway 237.  It would be fun to come back when I could go through them all.
The next 20 miles were filled with beautiful green fields filled with wild flowers and livestock.  I even saw a field that had cut hay on the ground. After the second SAG stop at 35 miles we turned on to a country road.  It was so nice not having traffic and the wind was kind of blocked by the trees. At mile 63 we had two bridges to cross that had a small shoulder. The guides wanted to do a vehicle escort for our safety.  After crossing, it was 6 more miles to the hotel.  I arrived in town at 2 and stopped off at the Dairy Queen for a fish burger and a chocolate dip cone. I then rode on in to the hotel.
We had a great supper tonight.  The Guides made Mojitos and we played Pictionary for Anna's last night with us as our guide. Sad to see her go. We will all miss her.
On a side note, a little info on how my body is holding up. I have been feeling really good and my legs have felt strong, but by mile 10 today my body was not feeling the best.  My quads were tired and screaming at me.  After the first SAG stop my legs continued to feel fatigued. This was the first day that I felt like I really didn't want to be on the road. At the second SAG stop I ate a banana, tangerine, beef jerky, pickle, pretzels and a few pieces of licorice. I also ate some gel energy chews and took some electrolytes. About 7 miles down the road I started to feel better. I did finish the day feeling good.  Anna said I probably needed salt or the calories.  Whatever it was I am glad my body figured it out.
We have a day off tomorrow :-)

  1. Sherry,

You are doing awesome. I remember I hit the same kind of plateau after a month on the road. Might be like that for a couple of days, but after riding for 30+ days and all your training before hand, you are stronger on the bike then you have ever been. Today's issue was more likely the stress of the trucks on the road than on any actual physical issue. Remember when I had to deal with the harvesting convoys in Kansas, almost blew me off the road, combined with headwinds made it long days.
    Stay strong and enjoy.
