Fredericksburg, TX to Austin, TX
4/7/18
COLD! That is what I have to say about today's 77 mile ride. The temperature was in the mid 40s and there was a lot of moisture in the air. It didn't help that the wind was blowing 10-20 mph. Everything was warm except my face and toes. There was a fine mist at a few different times of the ride.
The first SAG stop was at 20 miles. I hadn't drank hardly any water so I just checked in and kept going. At mile 26 I saw a biker camping on the side of the road. He was still in his tent. I thought that he was probably the wiser one because he was waiting for it to warm up some before he got on the road. The wind seemed to change from headwind to tailwind to side wind many different times. At mile 35 I stopped at a convenience store to warm up. My feet felt like ice blocks. It didn't take long and I was on the road again. Our next SAG stop was shortly after that so I just kept going.
When we got closer to Austin the traffic became really heavy. There were some impatient drivers. At mile 67 Elise and i stopped at another convenience store for a coffee and a burrito. It felt so good to be inside where it was warm. We only had 10 miles left. It was misting again and I felt cold getting back on the bike. We made it through the traffic and got to the hotel at 2:15. This was the last day of the Texas Hill Country. You could see how the hills started to become smaller as we neared Austin.
My bike was having a little shifting issue so Anna loaded it up on the car rack and we took it to a bike shop. It was a minor thing and should be working fine now.
Kim, Margit and I took an Uber to Mellow Johnny's Bike Shop. You can't come to Austin without stopping there!
Total Miles: 1679
Flats: 3
Ruined Tires: 1
